Joanne Wacha: Do Radio

Joanne Wacha was born in 1984 in Harrow, London. Joanne attended local mainstream primary and secondary schools and also spent time in hospital, attending the hospital school, after becoming ill at the age of thirteen. After school she went on to a local sixth form college, then a residential special college and then on to university.

Yes, I did get careers advice. And they always – it always came to, ‘Why don’t you do radio?’ and I was like, ‘No no, why would I do radio when I could be on TV.’ That was my response, like why would I do radio for, I could be on the telly, I want to be on the telly. I don’t know if there was this element of wanting to be famous and be paid a lot, because I also wanted to make a lot of money because I knew there’s – I was fed up of getting my wheelchair a year after I’d been assessed, I was fed up of not being to – not being able to afford a nice family holiday and I realised that there was an element of being disabled and being some kind of – not so much poverty but not being on the same line as everybody else.
