Esther Annenberg: Going on the Trams

Esther, known as Etty, was born in 1909 in Upton Park in London. Etty went to Venetian Road Special School in Camberwell, London from the age of five, going on to an apprenticeship in dressmaking at Holdren's department store in Peckham. At the time of interview Etty was 104 years old.

Here Etty describes going on the trams with her brothers.

Transcript

My brothers and I used to have a lovely time, you know. They used to say, “Come on Ett, we’ll, go on the tram”. Do you remember the trams?
You used to go upstairs and they used to sway. And you used to swing backwards and forwards I used to think that was lovely. Funny, isn’t it? And a shilling all day. Yeah, you used to pay a shilling and go on the tram anywhere you like. Mm. And if we had that shilling and we could go, it was lovely.
