Ray Kathleen D’Arcy: Green as Grass

Ray was born in Egypt in 1926. Her father was in the army and the family moved to England when Ray was five, settling in Leicester in 1932. Ray attended mainstream primary and secondary schools.

Here Ray describes her sheltered childhood.

In those days I was shy, very shy. I was very reserved until I was, oh, quite old really. I wouldn’t have said boo to a goose anywhere, not until I was, oh what, in my thirties, I think before I even started to answer back to anybody. After I went to work at the telephone exchange, that’s when my life – I was as green as grass about things until I went to the telephone exchange, and believe me, my eye were opened with the girls I met there. Absolutely, I’d been very sheltered.
