David Filmer: Manhandled Up the Mountain

David Filmer was born in 1970 in London. At six his family moved to Hampshire, where he attended his local mainstream primary school. Then aged ten he went to two residential special schools, first in Reading and then Hampshire. He returned to the mainstream at sixteen, attending a local sixth form college and went on to university.

Here David describes taking part in a school trip to the Lake District.

We went to the Lake District, and I remember being manhandled in a group of probably about twenty kids, up to the top of one of the Pikes in the middle of the Lake District, and I've got a photograph I'll show you later, of me sitting on the top of a mountain top, which is somewhere which, I would never have imagined getting to, were it not for having a team of 'sherpas' around me. And the staff that day were incredible, I mean they roped in every volunteer they could get their hands on and persuade to come and be a part of it, and we went up the Lake District, probably for about a week, and did a whole load of school activities that any normal school would have been involved with, including going trekking, and we went trekking up a mountainside, great fun!
