: Mrs Hattersley

Here Mark describes being encouraged by his English teacher.

My favourite lesson would be English. I loved English, although none of the lads – we never – I certainly never let on that I liked the English teacher. She was a very middle class, 'pearls and twin set' kind of woman called Mrs Hattersley, but she had a brilliant way of encouraging you to read and of telling you stories and getting you to put your ideas down on paper. And I secretly, I really loved the lessons although it wasn’t cool to admit that, so I never did admit it.
