Ray Kathleen D’Arcy: No Skiving

Ray was born in Egypt in 1926. Her father was in the army and the family moved to England when Ray was five, settling in Leicester in 1932. Ray attended mainstream primary and secondary schools.

As far as my mother was concerned – I was brought up that I was normal. I was the same as my sisters so I did anything and everything unless – they weren’t allowed to wait on me, I didn't have little maids running round. If I really couldn’t do anything, then I was – they would do it for me, but if I could do it… I couldn’t skive and, you know, sort of, 'oh, do that for me', sort of business. I had to do it myself.
