Maresa MacKeith: Taking Exams

Maresa was born in 1984 in Sheffield. She was adopted as a baby and moved to Nottingham. At age 5 she went to a special school and then left at age nine and attended mainstream primary and secondary schools from then on, with a year of home schooling between two secondary schools. She then attended a local college and went on to university.

Here Maresa talks about taking exams in school.

It was quite a long haul to make it happen. There was so much preparation to just get me to take them. I had to send in my communication board so they could check it and also there didn’t seem to be enough staff to be with me in the exam as I needed a lot of assistance. We kept at it and eventually I could take them all and the feeling by then was of relief. I was too relieved to be nervous. It was overwhelming actually and again I look back in darker times and use that feeling of worth. It’s always about worth, I think.
